Density-Dependent Leaf Area Index: A Plateau Effect in Plant Canopies

When the density was low, there was a significant increase in the maximum leaf area index (LAI) per unit area as density increased. However, when the density reached a high level, the LAI increased gradually until it reached a maximum value, after which it remained constant (reached a plateau).
