In the rural areas, there were many large canals that were deep and wide enough to navigate by boat, as well as small ditches that cut through the fields to drain away the waste water. The water in the canals sometimes appeared clear, sometimes muddy and turbulent. On both sides of the canal, there were times when willow catkins danced in the air, and times when lotus leaves swayed in the wind. On the water, there were times when boats sailed by, and times when small boats were anchored. On the banks, there were times when old houses stood, and times when simple farmhouses dotted the landscape. Every time I arrived at the canal bank, I couldn't resist the urge to explore. I would sit on stone steps, stand on grassy embankments, or lie by the rocky stream, observing the speed and flow of the water, and the rise and fall of the waves. Sometimes I would sit in a leisurely boat, enjoying the cool breeze, or row the boat to admire the fertile fields. Sometimes I would climb up a tall building, overlooking the entire scene, or gaze up at the clear waves. At that moment, my heart and mind would feel at ease, my spirit would soar, and I would express my feelings in poetry and prose. This is a memory of my childhood spent wandering by the water channels."
