POEMS syndrome, also known as Crow-Fukase syndrome, is a rare disease that affects multiple systems in the body. The acronym 'POEMS' stands for:

Polyneuropathy - damage to multiple nerves in the body Organomegaly - enlargement of organs such as the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes Endocrinopathy - dysfunction of hormone-producing glands Monoclonal gammopathy - abnormal production of proteins by a single clone of plasma cells Skin changes - thickening, darkening, and increased hair growth on the skin

Other symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, fever, and shortness of breath. The cause of POEMS syndrome is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to overproduction of certain chemicals in the body, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
