Unit 1 My Name is… Lesson 1

Teaching Objectives:

1. Learn some basic words and expressions about introducing oneself.
2. Be able to introduce oneself in English: 'Hello! My name is…'
3. Develop students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Teaching Procedures:

Step 1. Warm-up

1. Greetings: Good morning/afternoon, students.
2. A song: 'Hello, hello, what’s your name? My name is…'
3. A game: 'What’s missing?' Write some words on the board, cover one of them with a piece of paper, and ask students to guess which word is missing.

Step 2. Presentation

1. Show a picture of a boy/girl and ask students to guess his/her name.
2. Teach the sentence 'Hello! My name is…' with gestures and let students repeat after you.
3. Ask students to introduce themselves to the class, using the sentence 'Hello! My name is…' and their own name. Give them some examples: 'Hello! My name is Lucy.' 'Hello! My name is Tom.'

Step 3. Practice

1. Pair work: Ask students to introduce themselves to their classmates, using the sentence 'Hello! My name is…' and their own name. Walk around the classroom and help them if necessary.
2. Group work: Divide students into groups of four. Ask them to introduce themselves to their group members, using the sentence 'Hello! My name is…' and their own name. Then ask them to ask each other questions, such as 'How old are you?' 'Where do you live?' 'What’s your favorite color?' Encourage them to use the sentences 'I’m…' 'I live in…' 'My favorite color is…' etc.

Step 4. Production

1. Ask some students to come to the front of the class and introduce themselves to the whole class, using the sentence 'Hello! My name is…' and their own name.
2. Homework: Ask students to draw a picture of themselves and write their names on it. They can also write some sentences about themselves, such as 'I’m a boy/girl.' 'I’m 8 years old.' 'I like playing soccer/reading books.'
