Synthetic vs. Natural Fibers: A Guide for Fabric Lovers
Synthetic fibers have been developed to imitate natural fibers. They are woven to resemble natural fabrics. Synthetics may be blended with natural fibers to increase the resemblance to the feel and characteristics of a natural fabric. Rayon, polyester, and nylon are typical synthetics.
The choice of fiber is important when you consider how you will have to care for a fabric. Wash-and-wear or easy-care characteristics are generally built into polyester fabrics. Easy care is particularly important for garments that will be laundered frequently, like children's wear and work clothes and uniforms. Rayon, even though it is a cellulose fiber like cotton and linen, is usually not as durable as the natural fibers and will not stand up to constant washing.
