Autophagy's Crucial Role in Oral Tissue Regeneration: A Comprehensive Review

The oral cavity is a unique environment that requires constant remodeling and regeneration, making autophagy essential for oral tissue regeneration. Furthermore, the oral cavity typically harbors a significant number of bacterial colonizers, and many oral diseases are caused by bacterial infection and subsequent immune reactions [14]. Numerous studies have reported that autophagy is involved in controlling infectious agents, limiting inflammatory pathologies, regulating myeloid/lymphoid cell differentiation, and coordinating multicellular immunity [14]. Considering the role of autophagy in repairing damaged tissue, it can be concluded that autophagy is closely associated with oral tissue regeneration. Although several studies have explored the role of autophagy in oral diseases and oral tissue regeneration, no systematic reviews have been conducted on the role of autophagy in oral tissue regeneration.
