Autophagy's Crucial Role in Oral Tissue Regeneration: A Comprehensive Review

The oral cavity is a unique environment that undergoes continuous remodeling and regeneration, making autophagy essential for oral tissue regeneration. Additionally, the oral cavity is home to a diverse range of bacterial colonizers, and many oral diseases are caused by bacterial infection and subsequent immune reactions. Studies have shown that autophagy plays a crucial role in controlling the burden of infectious agents, limiting inflammatory pathologies, regulating cell differentiation, and coordinating multicellular immunity. Considering the repairment of damaged tissue through autophagy, it is evident that autophagy has a close association with oral tissue regeneration. Despite various studies exploring the role of autophagy in oral diseases and tissue regeneration, a systematic review on the role of autophagy in oral tissue regeneration is yet to be conducted.
