Cultural Issues Encountered while Studying Abroad
Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity for students to experience new cultures, learn new languages, and gain a global perspective. However, it is not without its challenges. Cultural issues can arise when students encounter new customs, beliefs, and values that differ from their own. This essay will explore the cultural issues encountered while studying abroad, using three literature articles to support our arguments.
Firstly, one major issue faced by students while studying abroad is language barriers. In their article, “Language Barriers and Study Abroad: The Impact of Language Anxiety on Intercultural Adaptation,” Kim and Ruebel (2019) argue that language anxiety can hinder students’ ability to adapt to new cultural environments. They suggest that language anxiety can lead to negative attitudes towards the host culture, which can impact the student’s overall study abroad experience.
Secondly, cultural norms and values can also pose a challenge for students. In their article, “Culture Shock and Adaptation: A Study of International Students in China,” Li, Zhang, and Chen (2018) explore the impact of culture shock on international students studying in China. They argue that students may experience culture shock due to differences in communication styles, social norms, and values.
Lastly, racism and discrimination can also be an issue for students studying abroad. In their article, “Racism and Discrimination Experienced by International Students in Canada,” Dri and Chen (2019) examine the experiences of international students in Canada. They found that racism and discrimination were common, and that students often felt isolated and excluded from the host culture.
In conclusion, studying abroad can be a transformative experience, but it is not without its challenges. Language barriers, cultural norms and values, and racism and discrimination are all issues that students may encounter while studying abroad. By understanding these issues and developing strategies to address them, students can make the most of their study abroad experience.
