Automotive Electrical Equipment English Edition 5 Electronic Ignition System Chapter 5 Electronic Ignition System1 Introduction of electronic ignition system The basic difference be
ses the sensor coil, it induces an alternating voltage in the coil. This voltage is sent to the electronic control unit (ECU), which processes the signal and sends a trigger signal to the ignition coil to fire the spark plug. The frequency of the signal is proportional to the engine speed, and the ECU adjusts the timing of the spark accordingly.
- Sensor and operation of hall-effect type
4.1 Construction of hall-effect sensor
It consists of a hall element, permanent magnet, and a reluctor wheel:
See Fig.5-11 on page 164
4.2 Operation of hall-effect sensor
The hall element is a semiconductor device that generates a voltage proportional to the strength of the magnetic field applied to it. The permanent magnet creates a magnetic field that is interrupted by the reluctor wheel as it rotates. Each time a tooth on the reluctor wheel passes the hall element, it generates a voltage pulse. The ECU processes the signal and sends a trigger signal to the ignition coil to fire the spark plug. The frequency of the signal is proportional to the engine speed, and the ECU adjusts the timing of the spark accordingly.
- Advantages of electronic ignition system
- Higher voltage output for better ignition
- Electronic timing control for precise spark timing
- No mechanical advance mechanisms for improved reliability
- Longer spark for leaner air-fuel mixture and improved fuel economy
- Lower emissions due to more complete combustion
- Disadvantages of electronic ignition system
- More complex and expensive than contact-point system
- Requires a power source for the electronic control unit
- More sensitive to electrical interference and voltage spikes
- Conclusion
The electronic ignition system is a significant improvement over the contact-point system in terms of reliability, performance, and emissions. It is widely used in modern vehicles and has become an essential part of automotive technology
