Lesson Plan: Protecting Your Eyesight

Grade Level: Middle School (7th-8th)

Objectives:

1. Students will understand the importance of protecting their eyesight.
2. Students will learn ways to protect their eyesight.
3. Students will develop a plan to protect their eyesight.

Materials:

1. PowerPoint presentation
2. Handouts: “Tips for Protecting Your Eyesight”
3. Whiteboard and markers

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes) a. Begin the lesson by asking students why they think it is important to protect their eyesight. b. Discuss the various ways that we use our eyes every day, including reading, watching TV, and using electronic devices. c. Explain that taking care of our eyes is important for our overall health and well-being.

2. Presentation (20 minutes) a. Use the PowerPoint presentation to discuss the different ways to protect our eyesight, including:

• Wearing sunglasses to protect against UV rays
• Taking breaks from electronic devices
• Eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E
• Getting regular eye exams
• Using proper lighting when reading or doing work that requires focus b. Emphasize the importance of each of these strategies.

3. Activity (20 minutes) a. Distribute the handout “Tips for Protecting Your Eyesight” and have students read through it. b. Divide students into small groups and have them discuss and develop a plan for protecting their eyesight. They should consider which strategies they will use and how they will incorporate them into their daily lives. c. Each group will share their plan with the class.

4. Wrap-up (10 minutes) a. Recap the importance of protecting our eyesight and the strategies discussed in the lesson. b. Encourage students to follow through with their plans and to share them with family and friends.

Assessment:

Students will be assessed based on their participation in the small group discussion and the quality of their eye protection plan.
