The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was a federal socialist state that existed from 1922 to 1991. It was located in Eurasia and was the largest country in the world by land area. The USSR was founded after the Russian Revolution of 1917, which overthrew the monarchy and established a socialist government led by the Bolsheviks, under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. The USSR's government was based on a single-party communist state, and its economy was planned and controlled by the state. The USSR was a superpower during the Cold War, and its rivalry with the United States dominated world affairs for much of the second half of the 20th century. The USSR dissolved in 1991, leading to the creation of 15 independent states, including Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.
