Ionization Changes Explain Coordinated Broad Absorption Line (BAL) Variability
Coordinated variations in broad absorption line (BAL) features across a wide range of velocities (e.g. exceeding ≈10 000 km s⁻¹) can be better explained by changes in ionization rather than transverse motion scenarios. The latter would necessitate synchronized movements of gas located at varying distances from the supermassive black hole (SMBH), as suggested by studies conducted by Hamann et al. (2011), Capellupo et al. (2013), Grier et al. (2015), and Wang et al. (2015).
