A Novel Controlled-Release Coating System for Enhanced Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Agriculture

Efficiency-enhancing fertilizers have been developed to optimize nutrient release and reduce nitrogen losses, but their performance varies depending on soil texture, climate, and agricultural systems. In this study, a novel controlled-release coating system was designed using porous materials to capture substances with different molecular sizes, allowing for differentiated release related to crop growth dynamics. The system demonstrated significant advantages in laboratory tests, but further research is needed to validate its performance under relevant agricultural conditions and address challenges such as soil complexity and microbiome dynamics. Overall, the development of differentiated controlled-release coatings shows promise in improving nitrogen use efficiency and promoting sustainable agriculture.
