Should Volunteer Service Be Mandatory for High School Students? A Critical Analysis

It's a common belief that volunteer service should be a significant part of high school education. While some agree with this notion, I disagree. While this program undoubtedly offers benefits for teenagers, I believe it's ultimately a useless item for students.

Firstly, volunteer service is an unnecessary subject in the school curriculum. One key reason is that including it as a study assignment means students have to dedicate a significant portion of their study time to this activity. This reduces the time they should be spending on their academic pursuits. To be competitive in the job market later, students need to focus more on their learning. High grades are advantageous for securing desirable careers. Instead of students, more professional staff should handle this type of service, as they possess the necessary skills to care for individuals.

Secondly, community service should be undertaken by volunteers rather than high school students. Making it an obligatory item instead of a voluntary one would change the meaning of this activity. Students may become bored with charity work if there's an overwhelming amount of it. Even if it becomes a necessary item, they might vandalize public installations to relieve stress caused by the heavy workload of studies and charity. Community service should be decided by adults with more experience and knowledge in managing these activities.

Additionally, volunteer service might not be suitable for all high school students. Some students might have personal commitments or responsibilities that make it difficult to participate. Forcing them to engage in this activity could cause unnecessary stress and burden.
