The Hunger Games Chapter 9 Summary: Katniss's Alliance & Tracker Jacker Attack

In Chapter 9 of The Hunger Games, Katniss awakens in the arena after the Games have begun. She realizes Peeta is not by her side and fears for his safety. She climbs a tree to get a better view of the arena and sees the Careers, a group of tributes from wealthy districts, searching for her and Peeta. Katniss notices that Rue, the young tribute from District 11, is also in a tree nearby. They form a silent alliance and communicate through gestures. Rue points out a tracker jacker nest, a type of genetically modified wasp that can cause hallucinations and death. Katniss, with Rue's help, plans to drop the nest on the Careers to weaken them. She cuts the branch, releasing the nest, and it falls on the Careers, causing chaos. Katniss gets stung by a few of the wasps but manages to escape and hide. She later finds Peeta camouflaged near a river, badly injured and in need of medicine. They tend to each other's wounds and discuss their strategies moving forward. The chapter ends with Katniss realizing that the Games have only just begun and the challenges ahead will be even more dangerous.
