As an English teacher in a primary school, I believe it is important to not only teach the language itself, but also help students understand and appreciate Chinese traditional culture. By integrating elements of traditional culture into my English lessons, I aim to foster a sense of cultural pride and promote the inheritance of our rich heritage.
One way I incorporate Chinese traditional culture into my English lessons is by using traditional stories and fables as reading materials. For example, I may choose to read the story of 'The Monkey King' or 'The Legend of Mulan' in English, and then discuss the cultural significance of these stories with my students. This not only improves their English reading skills, but also exposes them to the values and virtues highlighted in these tales.
In addition, I organize cultural activities and events that allow students to directly experience and participate in traditional Chinese customs. For example, during the Chinese New Year season, I may organize a class dumpling making activity, where students learn about the significance of dumplings in Chinese culture and get hands-on experience in making them.
