"The Refutation of Idealism" was first printed in Mind in 1903. More important, however, it was republished in Moore's Philosophical Studies in 1922, about thre years before Woolf began thinking about To The Lighthouse.8 Given the high esteem in which some of the men in the Bloomsbury group held Moore, the book must have caused considerable discussion among them over a period of time and thus must have been quite visible to Woolf over that same period.
