Piaget's Term for Modifying Existing Schemas: Accommodation
d. accommodation
Piaget's theory of cognitive development emphasizes the importance of schemas, mental frameworks that help us organize and interpret information. When we encounter new experiences that don't fit our existing schemas, we must adapt. Piaget identified two key processes for this adaptation:
- Assimilation: Fitting new information into existing schemas.
- Accommodation: Modifying existing schemas to accommodate new information.
Accommodation allows us to learn and grow by adjusting our understanding of the world to incorporate new experiences.
