At this point, Gengar had reached level 22 and learned a new move called "Sucker Punch." As a Dark-type move, Sucker Punch allowed Gengar to strike first and interrupt the opponent's attack, dealing damage. However, it would fail if the opponent used a priority move or a status-changing move.

Although the previously acquired move, "Curse," had proven effective in battles where Gengar was at a disadvantage, the boy didn't want to rely too heavily on it. Moreover, the side effects of using Curse on Gengar's body were not pleasant. Therefore, the boy ultimately decided to replace it with Sucker Punch.
