The Toy Tree: A Symbol of Community Spirit
Gabe said, ‘It is going to be a toy tree.’ Mum looked at him quizzically. ‘What do you mean, Gabe?’ He explained the toy tree idea he’d seen in town. Mr. Snider grunted (哼), ‘Hmph, sounds like a waste of time and money.’ But Mum said, ‘That’s a wonderful idea, Gabe. Let’s do it.’
By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived. Gabe and his friends, armed with markers and glitter, wrote out the tags and hung them on the tree. Every day, more tags appeared, as people came from all over the estate to add their own wishes. Soon the tree was heavy with their hopes and dreams.
When Mr. Snider saw the colourful tags, he stopped grumbling. He began to take care of the tree, even trimming (修剪) its branches and sweeping the path with extra care. The tree had become a symbol of community spirit, and Mr. Snider had become a part of it.
On New Year’s Day, Gabe and his friends gathered under the tree, singing songs and exchanging hugs. As they looked up at the toy tree, they knew it wasn’t just a tree anymore. It was a symbol of love and hope that had brought their community together. And they knew that, as long as the tree stood, the spirit of giving and sharing would continue to grow.
