Critical Discourse Analysis of COVID-19 Pandemic News: Framing the Crisis and Shaping Public Opinion
This critical discourse analysis (CDA) examines the language used in news articles about the COVID-19 pandemic. The study focuses on the representation of the pandemic in the media, with a particular emphasis on the discursive strategies employed by news outlets to frame the crisis. The analysis draws on the theoretical framework of CDA, which highlights the role of language in constructing social reality and shaping public opinion. The study finds that news articles about the pandemic tend to employ a range of discursive strategies, including metaphor, framing, and modality, to construct a particular narrative around the crisis. This narrative often emphasizes the severity and urgency of the pandemic, as well as the need for collective action to address it. However, the analysis also reveals that news articles about the pandemic can be highly politicized and may reflect the biases and interests of particular media outlets or stakeholders. Overall, this study demonstrates the importance of critical analysis in understanding the role of language in shaping public discourse around the COVID-19 pandemic.
