Maize-based crop rotation systems play a critical role in safeguarding global food security. Therefore, comprehending the impact of preceding crops and the corresponding management practices on subsequent maize growth is of paramount importance. Here, we present a 6-year field experiment conducted in the annual winter wheat and summer maize rotation system of the North China Plain to investigate this issue.
