Gas Exchange in the Respiratory System: Where and How It Happens

Gas exchange occurs in the alveoli of the lungs where oxygen from inhaled air diffuses into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide from the bloodstream diffuses out into the lungs to be exhaled. This process is facilitated by the thin walls of the alveoli and the surrounding capillaries.
