Gas Exchange in the Respiratory System: Where and How It Happens

Gas exchange takes place in the alveoli of the lungs. Here, oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses across the same walls and into the alveoli to be exhaled.
