We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I could sense that something was bothering him, but I didn’t want to push him. It was then that I noticed that he was fidgeting with his shoelaces. I asked him if he needed help tying them, and he nodded shyly. As I knelt down to tie his shoes, I couldn’t help but feel proud of this little boy. Despite his challenges, he was determined to participate in the race. As I stood up, David looked up at me with a small smile on his face, and for a moment, all of his fears seemed to disappear. I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. As the whistle blew, he took off at his own pace, his arms pumping and his legs moving as fast as they could. The other children cheered him on as he passed by, and I could see the look of determination on his face. He may not have been the fastest runner, but he was a winner in his own right. As he crossed the finish line, I could see the joy in his eyes. He had done it, and he had done it on his own terms. I knew that this moment would stay with him for the rest of his life, and that he would always remember the day when he overcame his fears and proved to himself and everyone else that he was capable of anything.
