Genre Analysis: Understanding Discourse Organization Patterns and Macro-Cognitive Structures

I have also learned the similarities and differences between genre analysis and discourse analysis. The varying communicative functions and genres in discourse not only result in different linguistic styles, but also in different patterns of sentence and paragraph organization. In discourse, sentences or phrases are not randomly transitioned from one topic to another, but are systematically organized according to the coherence and potential development of the topics. This regularity forms the basis of discourse organization patterns, which reflect both the author's thinking patterns and the macro-level cognitive structure of the discourse. Since genre is one of the basic elements that constitute the characteristics of discourse, it has a constraining effect on the formation of discourse structure. Thus, the organization patterns of discourse are inevitably constrained by genre. 'Genre analysis' can help us analyze the organization patterns of discourse and explore the specific macro-level cognitive structures of specific discourses. Traditional rhetoric also emphasizes the relationship between genre and discourse organization patterns. Both domestic and foreign publications on rhetoric and writing have discussed how to organize sentences or paragraphs, such as using time and space relationships, process sequence, summarization and example relationships, and 'development by definition' for explanatory and argumentative texts.
