CARS Model: A Comprehensive Guide to Writing Effective Research Introductions

The CARS model comprises three rhetorical moves. Move one establishes the research area by elucidating the significance and necessity of the research question through three steps: establishing the focus of the issue, summarizing the topic, and reviewing prior research results. Move two establishes the research position by emphasizing the necessity of a particular study through four steps: refuting existing views, identifying research gaps, posing questions, and inheriting previous research findings. Move three occupies the research position by informing readers how to address the problem posed in the paper, including outlining research objectives, reporting on the current state of research on the topic, presenting major findings, and introducing the paper's structure. Through analyzing numerous abstracts and introductions by scholars in class, the author hopes to utilize the knowledge acquired in class when writing their future graduation thesis.
