SPAI-SF: A Short-Form for Assessing Smartphone Addiction
The Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) was developed to assess smartphone addiction among individuals. However, its length (28 items) may make it difficult to use in certain contexts. To address this issue, a short-form version of the SPAI (SPAI-SF) was developed and validated.
The development of the SPAI-SF involved selecting items from the original SPAI based on their ability to represent the construct of smartphone addiction. The resulting SPAI-SF consisted of 10 items, each rated on a 6-point Likert scale. These items covered different aspects of smartphone addiction, including preoccupation, withdrawal, tolerance, and negative consequences.
To establish the screening cutoff point for the SPAI-SF, data were collected from a sample of 560 smartphone users. Using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, the optimal cutoff point was determined to be 31.5, with a sensitivity of 0.833 and a specificity of 0.815.
Overall, the SPAI-SF was found to be a reliable and valid measure of smartphone addiction. Its brevity makes it a useful tool for screening and assessing smartphone addiction in various settings.
