The Significance of 'Nine' in Chinese Culture: Luck, Superstitions, and Numbers

'Nine' generally refers to the majority or a large number. In the past, people often used 'nine' to mean 'many'. Because 'nine' is an extreme number, Chinese people believe that encountering 'nine' is unlucky. Especially for elderly men, their 69th and 79th birthdays are celebrated as if they were their 70th and 80th birthdays. Many people also believe that 29 years old is a critical moment in life.
