Cultural Challenges of Studying Abroad: A Literature Review
Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity that offers students the chance to gain new experiences, knowledge, and skills. However, it is not without its challenges, particularly when it comes to cultural issues. This essay will discuss some of the cultural issues encountered by students while studying abroad, drawing on three literature articles.
Firstly, language barriers can be a significant challenge for international students. In a study conducted by Lee and Rice (2017), Chinese students in the United States reported experiencing language barriers in their daily interactions with classmates and professors. This can lead to social isolation and hinder academic performance.
Secondly, cultural differences can cause misunderstandings and conflicts. In a study by Jokikokko and Kekale (2019), Finnish students studying in China reported difficulties in adapting to the local culture, particularly in social situations. This highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness when studying abroad.
Finally, homesickness can also be a significant issue for international students. In a study by Li and Bray (2007), Chinese students in Australia reported feeling homesick and missing their families and home culture. This can lead to depression and a lack of motivation to engage in academic and social activities.
In conclusion, studying abroad can provide many benefits, but it also presents many challenges. Language barriers, cultural differences, and homesickness are just a few of the issues that international students may encounter. Therefore, it is essential to provide support and resources to help students navigate these challenges successfully.
