Zhong Wei, who works in the city, often visits his hometown. 'It's a shame that I had to leave my hometown. It's improved so much since I left,' he said on a recent visit.

Nowadays, more and more hometowns are changing for the better. Large hospitals and new schools are appearing. And in many places, the government has also built new roads and bridges. That has made traveling to villages, towns, and cities much easier. Thanks to the new roads around the village, Zhong Wei will now open an online shop that will sell delicious food from his hometown.

Zhong Wei also likes the new school in his village. 'The old school was opened in the middle of the last century,' said Zhong Wei, 'The classrooms we used to read and count in were really small. Now there's a completely new school with a big library. Some city schools have also sent teachers to help teach in the village.'

Zhong Wei regards such developments as important steps for his hometown. According to him, however, one thing will never change. 'In my hometown, there was a big old tree by the school. It has become quite a symbol of the place. When I was young, my friends and I liked to play under that big tree, especially in the summer. We had a happy childhood. Our hometown has given us many great memories.'

A man and his wife had a dog. When they went out, they always left their dog in the house. One evening they wanted to go to the cinema, so they left the dog in the house and locked the door and their garden gate. They went off in their car.

When the film was over, they came home. They opened the gate and put the car away. But when they came to the front door they found that part of the glass in the door was broken. The door was not locked and it was open. A thief! They went in and quickly looked in all the rooms to see if the thief had taken their things. Everything was in the right place and nothing was missing. The dog was sleeping in the sitting-room. The wife was angry with the dog. 'Why didn't you keep the door safe?' she said. The dog was happy to see its master. It began to wag its tail and then it went to the corner of the room and picked something up in its mouth. It went to the wife and dropped the thing at her feet. When she went to pick it up, she was very surprised. It was a strange shoe.
