National Reading Day: Cultivating Essential Qualities Through Reading

Chinese educators have long recognized the importance of reading for the country, and some educators suggested establishing a National Reading Day as early as 2003. They emphasized that people should read good books, especially classic works. Through reading, people can better learn gratitude, responsibility, and cooperation, which are the fundamental qualities that education aims to cultivate. Reading is particularly important for primary and secondary school students. If they do not develop an interest in reading during this critical period, it will be difficult for them to develop a reading habit in the future.
