COVID-19 Mortality: A Literature Review of Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, and Management
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact worldwide, with the virus causing a significant number of deaths. This literature review aims to provide an overview of the current understanding of COVID-19-related fatalities. Numerous studies have identified older age, male gender, and underlying health conditions as risk factors for severe disease and death. The virus primarily affects the respiratory system, leading to pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, it can also cause multi-organ dysfunction and exacerbate pre-existing conditions. The immune response plays a critical role, with an overactive immune system leading to a cytokine storm and subsequent organ failure. The management of critically ill patients involves supportive care, including mechanical ventilation and the use of antiviral drugs and immunomodulatory therapies. Understanding the factors contributing to COVID-19 mortality is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. Ongoing research is needed to further elucidate the mechanisms and identify potential therapeutic targets.
