The Information Age: Useful or Overwhelming? A Look at the Impact on Mental Health
We live in an 'information age'. However, I have never heard anyone, even the most clear-headed person, mention that we live in a 'useful information age'. The overwhelming amount of data and information is mostly useless entertainment, and it can easily drown us in its sheer quantity.
Our current living environment is not in line with our genes in many ways, which is detrimental to our emotional health. I believe that the innovation of information dissemination technology is the main factor contributing to the prevalence of depression. Although there have been few studies in this area, there are guiding examples, such as a Swedish study in 2005 that found a correlation between heavy use of communication technology and long-term stress, sleep disorders, and depression in young people.
