Alfalfa, with high yield, good palatability, and high protein content, is the largest and most important forage crop in China. However, there is a huge gap between the supply and demand of alfalfa in China. Planting alfalfa in the southern marginal land and winter idle fields can obtain high yields and ease the supply-demand contradictions. However, the distribution of acidic soil is widespread in the south, and aluminum toxicity on acidic soil will greatly restrict the growth of alfalfa. Studying the mechanism of aluminum tolerance in alfalfa, and exploring key aluminum-tolerant genes can provide an important target for genetic improvement of aluminum-tolerant alfalfa. Using the model plant Medicago truncatula for biological research has important reference value for the study and application of alfalfa. This study focused on MtSTAR1 and MtALS3 of M. truncatula, and analyzed whether they are involved in aluminum detoxification in alfalfa and their mechanisms.
