Since the reform and opening up, advanced science and technology, various art movements, and art schools from the West have come in droves, and the splendid diversity of Western art has shocked people, thus beginning an exploration of diversified art content in China. With the transformation of cultural context, contemporary ink painting presents a diversified aesthetic pursuit as a whole. Many ink painters have completely freed themselves from the dualistic thinking mode of the East and West, abandoned their impetuous psychology, and viewed ink painting with a more open perspective. They are fully aware that innovation in ink painting not only requires learning from Western art, but also shifting the focus to the personal feelings of the creative subject. It is precisely under this transformation that contemporary ink painting presents a great situation of diversified development.

Aesthetic Types The diversified contemporary ink painting can be roughly divided into three aesthetic types: conservative, innovative, and open-minded, which inherit the traditional conservative aesthetic view, innovate on the basis of traditional ink painting and Western realism, and integrate traditional and Western art forms and concepts, respectively.

The conservative aesthetic view inherits traditional techniques and concepts, emphasizes the ink brush taste and cultural expression of traditional calligraphy and painting, and pursues the spirit of 'Chenghuai Guandao' and 'unity of nature and man'. 'Shen, Miao, Neng, Yi' are its standards for painting evaluation. The conservative aesthetic view always adheres to the expression of Chinese traditional culture, maintains the one-centered orthodox position of 'ink brush centralism', expresses emotions through scenery, and conveys ideas through objects, ignoring real life and showing a negative and evasive attitude towards modernity.

The innovative aesthetic view improves traditional ink painting by borrowing from Western realism and some modern painting language on the basis of traditional aesthetic standards. While selectively inheriting traditional aesthetic standards, it emphasizes the innovation of traditional ink painting. For example, 'expressive ink painting' emphasizes the harmony between inner emotions and outer forms, and 'new realistic ink painting' emphasizes the combination of inner vivacious vitality and outer perfect charm. On the basis of traditional aesthetic standards, it adds Western modern aesthetic contents such as tension and formal beauty.

The open-minded aesthetic view integrates tradition and contemporary, borrows from Western modern and contemporary art forms and concepts such as abstract expressionism, deconstructionism, conceptual art, and performance art, while emphasizing the uniqueness of ink painting. For example, ink installation art in experimental ink painting, new media ink painting art, and performance art ink painting experiments. It is more inclusive, open, and free in aesthetics, reflecting diversification. While confronting tradition, it emphasizes originality, pays more attention to real life, and highlights contemporaneity. It is different from the elitism of traditional ink painting, advocating popularization of art.
