Cancer Stem Cell Formation: Three Distinct Pathways
Cancer stem cells (CSCs) can be formed in three distinct ways: (1) newly transformed MaSCs can acquire genetic mutations, (2) normal non-stem epithelial cells can gain self-renewal ability through oncogenic events and transformation, or (3) differentiated cancer cells can regress to a cancer stem cell-like phenotype to demonstrate cellular plasticity.
