People often say that a dog is man's best friend. Over thousands of years, humans have trained their dogs to do many kinds of jobs beyond guarding the home. For example, sheepdogs are famous for their ability to manage flocks of hundreds of sheep. Dogs have also been assisting people with disabilities for centuries. A guide dog can lead its blind owner, and today, dogs can even be taught to turn on lights, open refrigerators, and dial phones for their disabled handlers. For most people, though, dogs are simply beloved pets and companions for everyone in the family, young and old alike.
