Title: 'The Therapist'

Characters:

  1. Dr. Smith – A therapist
  2. John – A patient
  3. Susan – John’s wife
  4. Tom – John’s best friend

Act 1:

Scene 1: Dr. Smith’s therapy room. Dr. Smith is sitting behind a desk. John enters the room and sits down in front of Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith: 'So, John, what brings you here today?'

John: 'Well, I’ve been feeling a bit down lately, and my wife suggested that I come and see you.'

Dr. Smith: 'I see. Can you tell me a bit more about how you’ve been feeling?'

John: 'I don’t know. Just kind of sad, I guess. Like things aren’t going the way I want them to.'

Dr. Smith: 'Okay. Well, let’s start by talking about what’s been going on in your life.'

Scene 2: John is talking to Dr. Smith about his job, his wife, and his friends. He mentions that he feels like he’s stuck in a rut and that nothing exciting ever happens to him.

Dr. Smith: 'It sounds like you feel like you’re not living up to your potential.'

John: 'Yeah, I guess that’s it.'

Dr. Smith: 'Well, John, the first step in making a change is recognizing that you want to make a change. And it sounds like you do.'

Scene 3: Dr. Smith suggests that John try doing something new and different. John is hesitant at first but eventually agrees to try it.

Act 2:

Scene 1: John is at home. He’s sitting on the couch, looking bored. Susan enters the room.

Susan: 'Hey, John. What are you up to?'

John: 'Not much. Just watching TV.'

Susan: 'You know, I was thinking. We should do something fun this weekend. Maybe go on a hike or something.'

John: '(sarcastically) Oh boy, a hike. That sounds like a blast.'

Susan: 'Come on, John. It’ll be good for you. You’ve been looking a bit down lately.'

John: '(sighs) Fine. Let’s go on a stupid hike.'

Scene 2: John and Susan are on the hike. They’re both tired and sweaty.

John: '(panting) Why did we decide to do this again?'

Susan: 'Because it’s good for us!'

John: '(sarcastically) Yeah, I can feel the endorphins rushing through my body.'

Scene 3: John and Susan reach the top of the mountain. They’re both exhausted but exhilarated.

John: '(breathlessly) Wow. This is amazing.'

Susan: 'I told you it would be worth it.'

John: '(smiling) You were right. This was exactly what I needed.'

Act 3:

Scene 1: John is back in Dr. Smith’s therapy room. He’s smiling and seems much happier than before.

Dr. Smith: 'John, it’s good to see you looking so much better.'

John: 'Yeah, I feel great.'

Dr. Smith: 'So, tell me. What changed?'

Scene 2: John tells Dr. Smith about the hike and how it made him feel. Dr. Smith nods, looking pleased.

Dr. Smith: 'John, it sounds like you’ve made a real breakthrough.'

John: 'Yeah, I guess I have.'

Scene 3: Tom enters the room.

Tom: 'Hey, John. What’s up?'

John: 'Tom! What are you doing here?'

Tom: 'I just wanted to check in on you, man. Susan told me you’ve been seeing a therapist.'

John: 'Yeah, I have.'

Tom: 'Well, I’m glad you’re getting the help you need.'

John: 'Thanks, Tom. And thanks for being such a good friend.'

Scene 4: The three of them chat for a bit before the scene fades to black.

End of play.
