CESM2-MARBL Model Accurately Estimates Global Marine Biogeochemistry
Control is an estimation of global marine biogeochemistry derived from the original model. Overall, CESM2-MARBL provides a reasonably accurate estimate of annual global POC fluxes. The simulated export productivity (EP) of the global ocean is 7.8 PgC/a, which is consistent with both observations (references) and global carbon cycle models (references). In this context, EP refers to the export of POC at a depth of 100m. The model predicts high particle export in boundary upwelling systems and high-latitude regions, while showing low particle export in the center of subtropical oligotrophic gyres (Fig. 2). This qualitative pattern of regions of low and high export corresponds to previous estimates (Lima et al., 2014).
