Intercultural Encounters at XJTLU: Reflecting on My Journey as a Student

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by discussing my intercultural encounters and what I have learned from them. As a student at XJTLU, I have had the opportunity to interact with people from different parts of the world, which has broadened my perspective and taught me valuable lessons. These encounters have not only challenged my preconceived notions but have also fostered a deeper understanding of the complexities of intercultural communication.

Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJTLU with an international student who was from a country where direct communication is highly valued. During a group project, this student was very straightforward and blunt in expressing their opinions. At first, I was taken aback by their approach and felt that they were being rude. Their directness felt confrontational, and I interpreted their bluntness as a personal attack. However, after having a conversation with them, I realized that in their culture, direct communication is seen as a sign of honesty and authenticity. They believed that beating around the bush was a sign of dishonesty and lack of respect. This experience taught me the importance of being aware of different communication styles and not making assumptions about someone's intentions based on my own cultural norms. I realized that my initial reaction was based on my own cultural background, where indirect communication is often preferred, and I had fallen into the trap of ethnocentrism, judging their behavior based on my own cultural standards.

Secondly, I had an encounter with a group of students from a collectivist culture who seemed to prioritize group harmony over individual achievement. During a class discussion, they were hesitant to speak up and share their opinions, even when they clearly had something to contribute. This behavior was confusing to me at first, as I come from an individualist culture where speaking up and asserting oneself is seen as a positive trait. I saw their silence as a lack of confidence or interest. However, by analyzing and evaluating the situation, I now realize that they were likely trying to avoid creating conflict or disrupting the group dynamic. In their collectivist culture, harmony and group cohesion are highly valued, and expressing dissenting opinions could be seen as disrespectful. This experience taught me the importance of being aware of power distance and cultural differences in how individuals approach group settings. I realized that their hesitancy to speak up wasn't a sign of weakness, but a reflection of their cultural values.

By analyzing and evaluating the situation, I now realize that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. My initial reactions to the international student and the collectivist group were based on my own cultural assumptions and biases, which prevented me from understanding their perspectives. In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would avoid making assumptions about someone's behavior based on my own cultural background. Instead, I would take the time to learn about their cultural norms and try to understand their perspective. This involves actively seeking information about their culture, engaging in open and respectful dialogue, and being willing to learn from their experiences. Secondly, I would be more aware of my own biases and prejudices, and try to overcome them by actively seeking out cultural diversity and engaging with people from different backgrounds. This includes being willing to step outside of my comfort zone and challenge my own assumptions. By embracing diversity and being open to new perspectives, I can develop a more nuanced understanding of the world and become a more effective communicator in diverse environments.
