Intercultural Communication at XJTLU: Reflecting on Personal Experiences and Learning to Become a Better Communicator

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by exploring my intercultural encounters as a student. Through these experiences, I have learned valuable lessons that have helped me to become a better intercultural communicator.

Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJTLU with an international student who had just arrived from a Western country. At first, I was excited to meet someone from a different cultural background and wanted to learn more about their culture. However, as we began to talk, I noticed that the international student was making a lot of assumptions about me and my culture. They assumed that I was not fluent in English and that I did not have any knowledge about Western cultures. I found this frustrating and felt that they were not interested in getting to know me as an individual.

By analyzing and evaluating the situation, I now realize that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. I thought that the international student would be more open-minded and interested in learning about my culture, but instead, they made assumptions based on my appearance and background. This experience taught me that stereotypes can be harmful and that it is important to approach intercultural communication with an open mind and a willingness to learn about others.

In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would try to understand the other person's perspective and ask questions to clarify any assumptions they may have about me or my culture. Secondly, I would focus on building a relationship with the other person by finding common interests and experiences that we can share. Finally, I would try to educate the other person about my culture in a respectful and non-judgmental way.
