Intercultural Communication: Lessons Learned at XJTLU

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by drawing on key concepts covered in LAN010. As a student at XJTLU, I have had numerous intercultural experiences that have taught me valuable lessons about communication and cultural awareness. These encounters have challenged my preconceptions and highlighted the importance of embracing diversity and cultivating effective communication skills.

Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJLTU with an international student from Germany. I had assumed that because she was from a Western country, she would be more outgoing and extroverted than the average Chinese person. However, when I approached her to strike up a conversation, she seemed reserved and uninterested. I was taken aback by her lack of enthusiasm and found myself struggling to connect with her. This unexpected interaction left me feeling confused and a little frustrated.

By analysing and evaluating the situation, I now realize that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. I had assumed that all Westerners were outgoing and extroverted, and when I encountered someone who didn't fit that stereotype, I was thrown off guard. This experience revealed a crucial lesson regarding stereotypes and culture shock - it is important to approach intercultural encounters with an open mind and not to make assumptions based on stereotypes. It's crucial to recognize that individuals within a culture are diverse and possess unique personalities and communication styles.

In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would take a step back and reflect on my own cultural biases and assumptions. I would remind myself that not everyone from a certain culture behaves in the same way and that it is important to approach each individual with an open mind. Understanding that cultural norms and communication styles vary significantly across different cultures is essential for effective intercultural communication.

Secondly, I would try to learn more about the culture of the person I am interacting with. By doing some research and asking questions, I can gain a better understanding of their background and values, which can help me to communicate more effectively. It's important to acknowledge and appreciate cultural differences rather than assuming they are inferior or irrelevant. Engaging in open dialogue and seeking to understand others' perspectives can foster mutual respect and understanding.

Finally, I would aim to be more patient and understanding. Intercultural communication can be challenging, and it is important to remember that misunderstandings are bound to occur.
