Reflecting on Intercultural Experiences at XJTLU: Lessons in Communication and Empathy

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by discussing my intercultural encounters and what I have learned from them. As a student at XJTLU, I have had the opportunity to interact with people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Through these experiences, I have learned valuable lessons about communication, cultural differences, and overcoming stereotypes.

Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJLTU with an international student from Africa. He was a bright and engaging individual, but at first, I found it difficult to communicate with him due to his accent, and I struggled to understand what he was saying. I recall feeling a sense of frustration, as if a barrier was preventing us from connecting. This initial struggle with communication, however, quickly transformed into a profound learning experience. It was during this encounter that I realized my difficulty in communicating stemmed from a lack of patience and understanding on my part. I had not taken the time to listen carefully and adjust to his unique way of speaking. I was so accustomed to my own language and accent that I struggled to adapt. I immediately made a conscious effort to be more attentive and engaged in the conversation. I started by slowing down my own speech, paying careful attention to his words, and asking him to repeat himself when I didn't understand. It was an act of genuine curiosity and a willingness to bridge the gap between our different communication styles. Through this process, I was able to develop a better understanding of his accent, the cultural nuances of his language, and a deeper appreciation for his unique background.

By analyzing and evaluating the situation, I now realize that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. I had subconsciously assumed that because he was from Africa, he would speak a certain way, and I had not taken the time to understand his unique background and experiences. In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would try to be more patient and understanding when communicating with people from different backgrounds. I would also be more aware of my own biases and stereotypes and work to overcome them. This includes actively seeking out information about different cultures and challenging my own assumptions. I would also strive to be more mindful of my nonverbal communication and ensure that my body language is open, inviting, and respectful. Additionally, I would seek out opportunities to learn more about different cultures and customs, both through formal education and informal interactions with people from different backgrounds. This could include attending cultural events, participating in language exchange programs, or simply engaging in conversations with people from diverse backgrounds.
