Reflecting on Intercultural Experiences at XJTLU: From Culture Shock to Effective Communication
The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by exploring my intercultural encounters and analyzing the lessons I have learned from them. As a student at XJTLU, I have had the opportunity to interact with individuals from various cultural backgrounds. These encounters have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of different cultures and have helped me to become a better intercultural communicator.
Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJLTU with an international student who came from a country where the culture was vastly different from mine. Initially, I found it difficult to communicate with this student due to the language barrier and the cultural differences. I was unsure of how to approach the situation, and my lack of knowledge about the student’s culture made it challenging to establish a connection.
By analyzing and evaluating the situation, I now realize that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. I had preconceived notions about the student’s culture, and I was quick to judge based on my limited understanding. This experience taught me the importance of being open-minded and non-judgmental when interacting with individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would take the time to learn more about the other person’s culture and customs. This would enable me to understand the differences between our cultures and help me to avoid making assumptions. Additionally, I would make an effort to communicate more effectively by using simple language and avoiding cultural references that may not be understood by the other person.
Furthermore, I would make an effort to listen actively and show empathy towards the other person’s perspective. This would involve acknowledging the differences between our cultures and being willing to learn from the other person’s experiences. By doing so, I believe I would be able to establish a connection with the other person and build a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.
In conclusion, my experiences at XJTLU have taught me valuable lessons about intercultural communication. I have learned that being open-minded, non-judgmental, and willing to learn about different cultures are essential qualities for effective intercultural communication. I believe that these lessons will help me to become a better intercultural communicator in the future, both at XJTLU and beyond.
