Reflecting on Intercultural Experiences at XJTLU: Learning to Communicate Beyond Boundaries

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by discussing my intercultural encounters and experiences as a student. These experiences have taught me valuable lessons that will help me become a better intercultural communicator in the future.

Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJLTU with an international student who came from a completely different cultural background. At first, I found it difficult to communicate with them as they spoke a different language and had different customs and practices. However, as we spent more time together, I began to understand and appreciate their culture, and we were able to connect on a deeper level.

By analysing and evaluating the situation, I now realise that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. I had preconceived notions about their culture and was not open to learning about their customs and practices. However, by being open-minded and willing to learn, I was able to overcome my initial discomfort and form a meaningful relationship with the international student.

In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would try to be more empathetic and understanding towards people from different cultural backgrounds. I would also make an effort to learn more about their culture and practices, and be open to new experiences and perspectives. Additionally, I would be more aware of my own biases and stereotypes, and actively challenge them by seeking out new information and experiences.

In conclusion, my intercultural experiences at XJTLU have taught me valuable lessons about the importance of being open-minded and empathetic towards people from different cultural backgrounds. By challenging my own biases and stereotypes, I have been able to form meaningful relationships with people from all over the world. I believe that these experiences will help me become a better intercultural communicator in the future, both at XJTLU and beyond.
