Intercultural Communication at XJTLU: Reflecting on Personal Experiences

The purpose of this essay is to reflect on my personal experience at XJTLU by discussing my intercultural encounters and experiences. As a student here, I have had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, and these interactions have taught me valuable lessons about cultural differences and communication.

Firstly, I once had an encounter at XJTLU with an international student who was from a country that I knew very little about. I noticed that I had a difficult time communicating with them, and I felt frustrated that I couldn't understand their accent. I also found myself making assumptions about their culture based on my limited knowledge and stereotypes that I had been exposed to in the media.

By analysing and evaluating the situation, I now realise that I was suffering from culture shock due to being stereotyped. I had been so used to communicating with people who were similar to me in terms of language and culture that I found it difficult to adjust to someone who was different. However, I also realised that my assumptions were unfounded, and that I needed to learn more about the person's culture in order to communicate effectively.

Through my experiences at XJTLU, I have learned that effective intercultural communication involves being open-minded and willing to learn about different cultures. This means being aware of our own cultural biases and assumptions, and being willing to challenge them in order to build relationships with people from different backgrounds.

In the future, there are a number of things I would do if a situation like this was to occur again. Firstly, I would take the time to learn more about the person's culture and history before making any assumptions. This would involve asking questions and being open to learning new things. I would also try to be more patient and understanding when communicating with people who have different accents or who speak a different language than me. Finally, I would be more mindful of my own cultural biases and assumptions, and work to challenge them in order to build stronger relationships with people from different backgrounds.

In conclusion, my experiences at XJTLU have taught me valuable lessons about intercultural communication. I have learned that effective communication involves being open-minded, willing to learn, and aware of our own cultural biases and assumptions. By applying these lessons in my future interactions with people from different cultures, I hope to become a better intercultural communicator both at XJTLU and beyond.
