Marine Bivalves: Double Threat from Antibiotic Residues and Microplastics

This is a concerning issue as both pollutants can have adverse impacts on the health of these organisms and potentially on human health through seafood consumption. Antibiotic residuals can promote the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, while MPs can cause physical damage to the gut and reduce feeding efficiency. Additionally, MPs can accumulate other pollutants, such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which can further increase the toxicity of the MPs. Therefore, it is important to investigate the co-exposure of marine bivalves to these pollutants and assess the potential risks to both the environment and human health.
