Are We Really Free? Maybe, Maybe Not. You Decide.
Are we really free? Lots of folks think so. They reckon our thoughts and actions are all our own choices, like when you hit that 'skip' button. What I wore and ate for breakfast this morning, a shirt and some pork buns, were totally my decision, right? But we all know that every action has a consequence. Whatever's happening right now is just the consequence of stuff that happened before. You might think we're free to do whatever we want, but also that the universe is all about cause and effect. Now, let's talk about my breakfast. I had two pork buns and a glass of soy milk. The 'free thinkers' would say I just felt like it, no real reason. But those 'determined' types would say those feelings didn't just magically appear, they were all connected to other stuff, like the fact that greasy fried dough makes me feel yucky, and those dry noodles would make me thirsty. Plus, I'm a lazy fella and the pork bun place was right there, while the noodle shop was a block away. See, according to this way of thinking, our fancy 'free choices' are just a bunch of thoughts adding up to one result. So, those 'determined' folks think free will is a big ol' illusion, just like that French philosopher guy, Paul-Henri Thiry, said.
Everything that happens is just part of a long chain of events, like dominoes falling. We're all part of the physical world, which has rules. You might think your mind can do whatever it wants, but your mind is just your brain, which is part of your body, which is part of the universe. And in this universe, everything is connected. It's all about cause and effect. No room for free will in this picture. We're all just parts of a big machine, doing what we're programmed to do. Oedipus had to kill his dad and marry his mom, I had to eat pork buns and soy milk. And you, yes you, had to watch this video to the end, whether you liked it or not.
