Summer's First Day: A Short Story about Freedom and a Teacher's Kindness
On the last day of school in 1964, Cory Mackenson and his classmates anxiously waited for the bell to ring, signaling the start of summer. Despite their teacher's attempts to hold them back, they were soon released into the world beyond the classroom. Mrs. Neville, however, called Cory back and encouraged him to enter a writing contest sponsored by the Arts Council. As he left, Cory saw a different side of Mrs. Neville, a woman who was alone and growing old. With a newfound appreciation for his teacher and a heart full of excitement, Cory ran out into the summer sun, ready for whatever adventures awaited him.
